A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
— John 13:34-35

Why should I become a member?

A Biblical Reason:

Christ is committed to the church. “Christ loved the church and gave his life for it.” Ephesians 4:25

The church matters to Jesus. Not just the invisible church but the local church. It’s his instrument to transform lives, impact the culture, and make His name famous. If the church matters to Christ, it should matter to us.

A Personal Reason:

It will help you build some spiritual muscle. “Therefore, let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity.” Hebrews 6:1

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another.” Hebrews 10:25

The New Testament places a tremendous emphasis on the need for Christians to be accountable for spiritual growth. You can’t go at it alone. We need each other – to encourage, challenge, inspire, comfort, love, and be loved. Sunday morning is not enough.

A Practical Reason:

It defines who can be counted on. Every team has a roster. Every school has an enrollment, every business a payroll, every army an enlistment. Membership identifies our families. Membership says, “You can count on me. I’m in it for the long haul.”

A Couple More Reasons:

Church membership will help your pastor and elders be more faithful shepherds. “They keep watch over you as men who must give an account.” Hebrews 13:17

As your elder team, we want to take seriously our responsibility before God to care for your spiritual lives. This is hard to do if we don’t really know who is a part of this flock.

Also, church membership gives you an opportunity to make and keep promises.

When someone becomes a member of GI Free, they make promises to obey the Bible, serve, attend worship, and give, as well as to do things that make for unity, peace, and purity. We ought not to take these promises lightly. These are solemn vows and we must hold each other to them. If you don’t join the church you miss out on great spiritual benefit, and so do your leaders and the rest of the church.

Next Steps:

If you call GI Free your church home, we encourage you to fully commit yourself by becoming a church member. The first step in doing that is through our Discover Membership Class. The discovery class is offered periodically throughout the year and is intended to help you discover who we are, why we exist, and where we are headed. This class is a mandatory first step in the membership process.

If you have yet to firmly plant yourself fully in the local church, come join us. We would love to get to know you better. If you have questions, please email us at info@gifree.org.
